CleanTECH San Diego Educates Congress with Clean Economy Network

In July, CleanTECH San Diego joined the Clean Economy Network in Washington DC for meetings with Members of Congress and Administration officials to educate them on the region’s clean energy economy. The primary purpose of these educational meetings was to address the misperceptions and lack of understanding about the measurable growth underway in local markets and to underscore the policy barriers to global and regional competitiveness.

CleanTECH San Diego Participates in Governor's Conference on Renewable Energy Generation

On July 25-26, CleanTECH San Diego participated in Governor Brown's Conference on Renewable Energy Generation at UCLA. This invitation-only two day conference was organized to discuss the Governor's goal of 12,000 MW of distributed generation. Conference attendees included regulators, industry and the environmental community while exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by the Governor's ambitious goal.

CleanTECH San Diego Testifies in Support of City of San Diego's Electric Car Sharing Program

On July 27, CleanTECH San Diego testified before the City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee in support of Mayor Sanders' all electric car sharing pilot program. This first of its kind car-sharing program will make 300 electric vehicles available for public rentals. This measure was voted out of Committee and now awaits the City Council's final approval. SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

Greening San Diego

Having already completed Phase I installation of 968 street lighting retrofits earlier this year, the City of Santee is on track to secure Council approval in August to proceed with Phase II retrofit of the city's remaining 782 street lights. Santee's annual street lighting expenditures will be reduced by $110,000. Padre Dam Municipal Water District has initiated a feasibility analysis for solar PV renewable production on at least five prime sites that have been identified, including several reservoirs with pump stations or other electrical load, as well as the employee parking lot. Greening San Diego program has initiated best practice sharing between UC San Diego and SD County Water Authority and Padre Dam while also facilitating introductions to CleanTECH San Diego's solar PVsupplier members. Speaking to the July 21st Energy Technical Assistance Program (ETAP) Workshop at CCSE, Marty Turock presented his "Collaborating for Bigger Benefits" plan. The case was made for regional collaboration on Parking Garage and Parking Lot lighting retrofits to LED luminaires with bi-level controls showcasing numerous case studies with documented 50-80% cost savings. Ten of the region's largest public agencies have pledged their commitment to participate in this initiative. CleanTECH San Diego is moving forward to secure funding for this launch.

Street Lighting Work Group - SLWG

The San Diego Regional Street Lighting Working Group is on the threshold of transitioning into the "piggyback" phase. All remaining cities/municipalities interested in pursuing roadway and/or residential street lighting retrofits will be able to leapfrog the usual RFP process and "piggyback" off the contracts that have been executed by other cities that have included a Public Agency Participation clause. This permits other agencies to procure streetlights under comparable price and terms. The City of Santa Ana has collaborated with our regional SLWG and is on track to secure Council approval for the retrofit of 250W HPS street lights with 121-watt LED luminaires. They have included the public agency piggyback clause so that the cities of Lemon Grove and Oceanside may also have the option topiggyback.

CREBS Update

The California Solar Initiative (CSI) incentives remain indefinitely suspended in Step 8. Over the last month 12 projects from the Non-Residential Waiting List encompassing 1.66 MW received their CSI incentives from existing CSI reservations that were cancelled. As of June 25, the Non-Residential Waiting List backlog numbers 72 projects totaling 6.6MW and representing $5.4 million in total incentives. CleanTECH San Diego and CCSE encourage any non-residential entities that are proceeding with solar PV installations to submit their reservations to secure a spot on the Wait List.

This addition makes Waste Management the largest owner and operator of clean-running, heavy duty refuse trucks in North America. In just one year, these 1000 natural gas trucks will displace eight million gallons of petroleum and eliminate 45,100 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
