REGIONAL INITIATIVES

SMART GRID

Kleiner Perkins Talks Smart Grid with CleanTECH San Diego and 300 Participants
Three hundred stakeholders joined CleanTECH San Diego in its inaugural CleanTECH San Diego Showcase, hosted on November 12. The event featured Kleiner Perkins partner Ellen Pao in a keynote presentation as well as panel remarks by three regional CEOs with companies in the smart grid sector. The panel was comprised of Applied Solar’s David Field, PCN Technology’s Dr. Shastri and Paul Wilbur from Aptera Motors. The panel discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with a transition to a smart grid, noting that San Diego is particularly well positioned to demonstrate the value of smart grid technologies with its well established high tech sector and its growing green tech sector. The evening was sponsored by member company Mintz Levin and moderated by Lee Krevat, Director of Smart Grid Initiatives for SDG&E. The event was generously supported by our pro bono partners at Hutchens PR and Promar Designs. Planning is underway for the second CleanTECH Showcase coming in the first quarter of 2010.

CREBS

Planning Underway to Implement CREBs in San Diego Region

CleanTECH San Diego, in continued collaboration with it’s municipal partners and pro bono service providers are convening working groups to design an execution strategy in the wake of its Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs) awards. This regional opportunity will further San Diego’s leadership position as a dominant solar city. This strategy is in response to the San Diego region’s recent award announcement of over $150 MM in CREBs allocations which will be used to install solar rooftop and shade structures at close to 200 sites region-wide. When all projects are complete, it will bring an additional 20 megawatts of solar power to the region in addition to welcomed local green jobs.

POLICY AND ADVOCACY

Advocacy Committee Tackling Tough Issues

CleanTECH San Diego’s Advocacy Committee established a subgroup to address key legislative and regulatory issues. One issue capturing early attention is how to structure Feed in Tariff. There is pending legislation as well as an ongoing regulatory proceeding that addresses the merits of an auction system versus a tariff structure. The working group is sharing information and discussing possible areas of alignment between member interests. This work is expected to proceed.

In other Advocacy Committee news, the Committee is preparing for a Roundtable discussion with Mayor Sanders on December 8. Hosted by the EDC at the invitation of the Mayor, representatives of each industry sector will join the Mayor in an open and constructive discussion about how to continue improving the business climate for the benefit of our sector and our region. Industries such as solar, wind, biofuels, energy efficiency, smart grid, transportation and others will be represented as CleanTECH San Diego helps advance its advocacy agenda before policymakers.

CleanTECH San Diego Participates in Mayor’s Third Economic Summit

Chairman Jim Waring made a presentation to Mayor Sanders and a group of approximately 50 business and government leaders on November 19. The presentation was part of the Mayor’s Economic Summit—the third in a series of meetings convened by Mayor Sanders to focus on workable solutions for improving the City’s economy and quality of life. Waring made a presentation on the opportunities associated in our region’s clean technology sector.

Energy Efficiency

On November 17, the San Diego Clean Enterprise Program was presented to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce during their Eco Tour. The bus tour brought leaders of the Carlsbad community to four featured businesses dedicated to sustainability. The first stop was the Mellace Nuts, a family owned snack manufacturer, demonstrating sustainable business practices. Next stop included the Lund Realty office, a highly efficient office space. The Stater Brother’s grocery store came next, whose SolaTube skylights are just one aspect of energy efficient measures integrated at their facility. The final stop was E-World Recyclers, a business that recycles computers and other electronics. The eco-tour participants were further introduced to the financial solutions available through CleanTECH San Diego’s Clean Enterprise Program enabling businesses to adopt energy efficiency measures with virtually no capital outlay.

Streetlight Working Group

The regional Peer-to-Peer Street Lighting Working Group is continuing to move forward in developing specifications for energy efficient induction and LED lighting systems to retrofit and significantly reduce energy consumption from the existing HPS and LPS street lights across the region. CleanTECH San Diego is working with the local astronomy community, in particular Palomar and Mt. Laguna Observatories to ensure the effects of transitioning to these broad spectrum light sources are minimized.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

Greening San Diego Program

The City of Santee will issue an RFP in January for their investment-grade audit that provides the detailed scope and costing necessary to move forward with targeted EECBG energy efficiency upgrades to city-owned facilities. The City of Lemon Grove Redevelopment Agency completed the Citron Court project which is their first affordable housing complex built to LEED standards. The Cities of Santee and Lemon Grove and Santee Schools all received IRS CREBs bonding allocations and are participating in our CREBs Implementation core team. At this month's "Greening San Diego" meeting presentations were offered from ICLEI and SDG&E's Cool Planet Program in conjunction with The Climate Registry as partner public agencies prepare to establish their GHG baselines in 2010.

CAPITAL FORMATION

SCRUB 2010

The Capital Formation Committee is accepting candidate companies for its 2010 SCRUBs. The next two SCRUBs are scheduled for January 13 and May 12. The CleanTECH SCRUB is a member only event which provides an opportunity for a small group of prescreened early stage clean tech companies to present their business case to a group of CleanTECH members. Companies make a 15 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. The SCRUB group will offer guidance and connections, including, where appropriate, advice on access to capital, contacts with potential strategic partners and access to local services for early stage businesses. Qualified companies must be incorporated, have a business plan and be revenue generating or have a credible plan for revenue generation. If you are interested, please submit a three page business plan summary to Capital Formation Committee Chair Mike Elconin or Lisa Bicker.
