REGIONAL INITIATIVES
ALGAE
CleanTECH San Diego continues its focus on supporting the region’s advancement of algae businesses. In this year’s effort, we will accelerate our work with a particular focus on impacting the regulatory landscape. In anticipation of algae related legislation introduced at the state level, we are organizing and engaging early. In crafting and executing our collective agenda, these efforts will be led by CleanTECH San Diego’s newly organized Advocacy Committee, chaired by BIOCOM President and CleanTECH Board member Joe Panetta. The CleanTECH San Diego algae stakeholders group meets on January 7, 2010.
CREBS
CleanTECH San Diego held the first in a series of implementation meetings to ensure the region maximizes its use of Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs). The San Diego region recently secured an allocation of over $150 million dollars to finance the installation of solar PV on municipal buildings. San Diego’s amount equals one of every five dollars awarded by the federal government for this national program. Participating municipal governments include UC San Diego, San Diego State, San Diego Unified Schools, the Cities of Chula Vista, Lemon Grove and Santee, Santee Schools and others. In conjunction with its pro bono service partners Latham & Watkins and Stone & Youngberg, CleanTECH San Diego hosted a deliberative meeting to explore implementation strategies. With the focus on joint product procurement and financing strategies, several follow up meetings are scheduled throughout January.
CAPITAL FORMATION
January 13 SCRUB event
CleanTECH’s Capital Formation Committee selected its slate of regional companies for its upcoming SCRUB on January 13. This member only event enables select promising young companies in the region to make a short presentation to a broad cross section of CleanTECH San Diego members with a goal of accelerating their businesses development. In addition to the cleantech company presentations, the committee will also hear from Rosibel Ochoa who leads the Von Liebig Clean Tech Challenge. Rosibel is well on her way to planning the 2010 Challenge with CleanTECH San Diego as a strategic partner organization. The January 13 SCRUB will be generously hosted in the offices of CleanTECH Member, Morrison Foerster.
Energy Efficiency
The Clean Enterprise Program’s pilot project, Old Town Trolley, has been nationally recognized for its efforts in energy efficiency. Since last summer’s launch of our commercial energy efficiency program, Old Town Trolley has been awarded Energy Star’s Small Business Award for their use of On-Bill Financing for facility upgrades and efficient retrofits. Old Town Trolley was one of only seven award recipients. Its facility managers report that through the implementation of highly efficient light fixtures, Old Town Trolley has reduced its monthly energy consumption by nearly 35%. In addition to Old Town Trolley, CleanTECH San Diego together with its partners at SDG&E and Mayor Sanders have helped 10 regional businesses access rebates and financing for energy efficiency retrofit projects. Participants in the Clean Enterprise Program include restaurants, bars, and small retail stores who are now enjoying the program’s intended energy and cost savings.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
GREENING SAN DIEGO PROGRAM
As the City of Lemon Grove is completing its EECBG applications for their ~$131K formula grant allocation by the January 12 submission deadline, the City of Santee is putting the finishing touches on their RFP for its investment-grade audit. This will detail the scope and costs necessary to execute their targeted EECBG energy efficiency upgrades to city-owned facilities. Both Santee and Lemon Grove joined 8 other cities and representatives from the County, the Port, SANDAG, and SDG&E at the quarterly Climate Action Planning Meeting hosted by The San Diego Foundation and led by ICLEI on December 14. In addition to reviewing ICLEI's recommended climate action planning process, CleanTECH San Diego provided an overview of the just announced California Strategic Growth Council Grants. A total of $177.5M will be allocated for Urban Greening Projects. Participants will submit their top two areas of project interest to determine if common and critical mass exists to leverage regional synergies.
STREET LIGHTING WORKING GROUP
Progress at the December 9 Regional Street Lighting Working Group Meeting continues to advance the program. The Group agreed on the template format for both the Induction and LED regional specification guidelines that the City of San Diego and City of Chula Vista have offered to take the respective leads. Since the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) issued its press release regarding solid state street lighting in October 2009, the National Electrical Manufacturer's Association and the U.S. DOE have issued responses that question the scientific validation of the IDA's recommendations. The Group agreed to drive for closure on all other specification details for its regional Induction and LED guidelines, and then consider Correlated Color Temperature and other "dark-sky" related specifications on an application-by-application basis.
Nominations Sought for Energy Awards
The San Diego Excellence in Energy Awards will be held on March 25th, 2010 and nominations are due by January 18th, 2010. Do you know of a business, organization or individual who made significant energy savings or adopted sustainable energy practices during 2009? The San Diego Excellence in Energy (SANDEE) Awards is presented annually by the California Center for Sustainable Energy to acknowledge San Diegans who have made a significant commitment to energy efficiency, energy conservation, renewable energy or greenhouse gas reduction. Award winners will be recognized at a reception to be held March 25, 2010. To submit your nomination contact: roman.partida@energycenter.org
CleanTECH San Diego Member Tops List of 35 Under 35 of Eco-CEOs
The San Diego region is well on its way to becoming a leader in the clean technology economy, and many of these companies are being launched by pioneers under the age of 35. CleanTECH member company Greener Dawn, Courtland Weisleder makes the San Diego News Network’s list of 35 under 35 “green and clean” eco- entrepreneurs.
CleanTECH San Diego Member Touted in Top 100 Bioenergy Company List
December 1, CleanTECH San Diego Member Balboa Pacific Corporation ranked 85 in the “Biofuels Digest 2009-2010 Hottest 100 Companies in Bioenergy.” Noteworthy is that over 1000 well-known international companies participated in this competition including Sapphire Energy and British Petroleum. Balboa Pacific Corporation has developed the Bal-Pac Thermal Conversion Pyrolytic Gasification System. It employs a continuous feed waste treatment technology that causes the destructive distillation of toxic or non-toxic organic material, either solid or liquid substances, reducing the feedstock to hot exhaust gases and biochar.
