ADVOCACY
CleanTECH San Diego and Partners Honored for CREBs Victory
CleanTECH San Diego team accepted three special awards in May to celebrate its leadership role in bringing to the region $157 MM in Clean Renewable Energy Bond allocations. On May 20th, Chairman Jim Waring accepted the “Collaboration Award” from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association annual ceremony with over 800 attendees. On May 14, the New Leaders Council honored CleanTECH San Diego with its “Community Collaboration Award.” Additionally, UCSD Chancellor Maryanne Fox presented CleanTECH Vice-Chair, Kelley Gale and Adrianna Kripke, both of Latham & Watkins along with Anna Van Degna of Stone & Youngberg with the “Chancellor’s Sustainability Award for Collaboration.” Citing their exemplary service and commitment, the Chancellor thanked these CleanTECH San Diego members for their successful efforts on behalf of the region.
CleanTECH San Diego Issues Position on AB 32
Led by the Advocacy Committee and supported by the Executive Committee, CleanTECH San Diego this month delivered its public position in support of the continued implementation of AB 32. This position in part states: “The San Diego region has demonstrated strong growth in multiple clean tech business sectors including solar, energy efficiency, biofuels, transportation and related industries. AB 32 creates an important framework for many of the San Diego region’s environmental and economic policies. This in turn provides certainty to the business and investment community. CleanTECH San Diego supports its continued implementation. We will continue working with stakeholders ensuring that California’s environmental policies create economic opportunity, foster innovation and reduce regulatory barriers to a clean energy economy.” Many CleanTECH San Diego members have expressed interest in participating in advocacy efforts to demonstrate their support in continuing implementation of AB 32. If your company has an interest, contact hollyl@cleantechsandiego.org.
CleanTECH San Diego Supports Water Bond Joining EDC and Chamber
The Executive Committee voted to support the Safe, Clean and Reliable Drinking Water Act of 2010. This $11 Billion water bond includes $227 million in direct funding to the San Diego region for drought relief, water supply management, and watershed protection projects. The San Diego region will be eligible to compete for more than $3 billion in grants designed to improve water supply, reliability, quality and the environment.
iHUB Application Filed
CleanTECH San Diego joined a CONNECT-led effort in an application to the State of California Governor’s Office of Economic Development to designate San Diego as an iHub. While no funds will flow initially from designation, there is a broad sense from the 20 partner organizations that a designation would further poise the region by underscoring many of its ongoing hub activities. A significant portion of the application focuses on convergence of sectors relating directly to clean technology. The iHub initiative will improve the state's national and global competitiveness by stimulating partnerships, economic development, and job creation around specific clusters through state-designated iHubs. These iHubs will leverage assets such as research, technology incubators, universities, and federal laboratories to provide an innovation platform for startup companies, economic development organizations, business groups, and venture capitalists.
CleanTECH Presents to City of San Diego Rules Committee
CleanTECH San Diego was invited to present on May 19 before the City of San Diego’s Rules Committee. Providing an introduction to its 700 cleantech company cluster, key programs and regional initiatives, the Council was keen to focus specifically on why and how it might better foster this promising cluster. The City’s economic development strategy is currently being revisited and updated to reflect the business development assistance necessary for new and emerging clusters since the strategy was last adopted. Joining in these presentations were representatives from South County Economic Development Council, SD Economic Development Corporation, and the US Green Building Council.
CAPITAL FORMATION
CREBs Coalition
Santee School District is on track to complete the region's first CREB-financed solar PV project with the 283 kW Hill Creek PV Shade Structure System. Contract execution is expected in June following construction this summer. The City of Santee has completed a preliminary solar PV assessment which penciled out favorably for four sites. Based on the initial consultant feedback, the CREBs vehicle may be more viable than PPA option. San Diego Unified School District continues progress in working toward finalizing a contract for its next phase of solar PV implementation scoping a mix of building rooftops and parking structures.
Second Annual Cleantech Innovation and Commercialization Program
On May 13 and 14, UCSD students and faculty presented their developing technologies to a strategic panel of industry experts in order to accelerate the growth of the region’s clean technology cluster. The program is a partnership between the City of San Diego, UC San Diego’s William J. von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism, CleanTECH San Diego, and other partners, designed to accelerate the commercialization of clean technologies out of university labs. As a key partner, CleanTECH San Diego provides an opportunity for researchers and students to interact with established technology companies, who serve as mentors and advisors for the three winners who will receive up to $50,000 of funding for further research and proof-of-concept studies.
SCRUB
On May 12, Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP hosted CleanTECH’s signature quarterly SCRUB program. Capital Formation Committee members received business presentations from the CEO’s of Home Town Farms, Butler Sun Solutions, 350 Green, and WaterSmart Software. While the commercialization needs of each company varied, strategic business support and network connections were designated. The upcoming SCRUB programs are scheduled for September 8 and December 8, 2010. Local and early stage cleantech candidates interested in being considered for SCRUB selection should forward their business summary to shainab@cleantechsandiego.org.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
GREENING SAN DIEGO
Padre Dam Municipal Water District will be finalizing and submitting its comprehensive engineering report this month paving the way for Santee, El Cajon and County of San Diego to replace potable water with recycled water for street sweeping and sewer flushing. CleanTECH San Diego is working with the San Diego County Water Authority to accelerate the adoption of this water conservation best practice region-wide. The San Diego Foundation, ICLEI, USD and UCSD are collaborating to offer interested students a Fall Semester course credit to receive hands-on training qualifying them to conduct the GHG baselining studies for the cities of Santee, Lemon Grove, Oceanside, Escondido, El Cajon, Del Mar and Coronado. ICLEI performed this service for 11 cities in the County last summer and will likely be the first region to have validated all its city’s GHG baselines. Grossmont Union High School District is close to executing its contract for their first ground-mounted 175kW solar system at the Monte Vista campus. They are entering the construction phase on the new Santana Performing Arts Building and are evaluating solar PV options.
STREET LIGHTING WORKING GROUP
The San Diego Regional Street Lighting Working Group (SLWG) successfully transitioned from the “specification phase” to the “procurement phase” as the momentum of this high impact energy efficiency retrofit project continues. The City of El Cajon is scheduled for a bid opening on their procurement of 960 roadway street lights on June 2 while the City of Santee is scheduled for a bid opening on their procurement of 894 street lights on June 10. When combined with Carlsbad's procurement in progress for 7,000 street lights and Chula Vista's pending procurement of 4,600 street lights, the current combined total of 13,000 street lights will be retrofitted in FY 2010. This will deliver 6 million kWh in annual energy savings, 4,300 tons of CO2 emissions reduction, $5 million in project expenditures creating 50 new jobs while saving taxpayers ~$1 million in annual energy and maintenance savings. The City of San Diego is next in line and currently collaborating with the other SLWG participants on a regional RFQ-Vendor Qualification.
SMART GRID & ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Smart Grid
On June 8, Xconomy.com in partnership with CleanTECH San Diego will host its Xconomy Forum –Rise of the Smart Energy event. Immediately following the Xconomy Forum, a reception and social networking event will showcase UC San Diego research projects in smart grids and sustainability. The showcase includes the world-renowned virtual reality environments of Calit2 and work related to the National Science Foundation's GreenLight project. MEMBER NEWS
DPR Construction Pursuing Platinum LEED on Regional Headquarters
Join us in saluting CleanTECH Member company DPR Construction with it’s completion of its new, 24,000-square-foot regional headquarters in University City while pursuing platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy Environmental Design (LEED) program. DPR estimates it will reduce the building’s energy consumption by 53 percent while providing outdoor view for 90 percent of the office. Generating as much power as the building consumes, a 64 kilowatt AC photovoltaic system was installed. The solar panels are expected to produce enough power to offset the building’s energy consumption, annually. We congratulate this platinum example of our region’s leadership and commitment to sustainable practices and clean technology adoption.
