GREEN SHEET :: NOVEMBER 2009
MEMBERSHIP OUTREACH
We welcome this month’s newest members. The City of Santee joins the membership roster. As CleanTECH San Diego’s first pilot city participating in its Greening San Diego Program, Santee is mastering a model for other municipalities to follow as they look to execute their cleantech agenda and advance their economic development goals. Clear Edge Power also steps into the cleantech movement. ClearEdge Power manufactures and markets the highly efficient ClearEdge5, a compact power and heat energy system for use in residential and small commercial buildings. Its innovative products enable customers to significantly reduce their electricity bills, improve the energy efficiency, and reduce their carbon emissions profile. This month also brought the addition of four new board of directors for CleanTECH San Diego. These directors include Darren Morgan of Cushman Wakefield, Bill Davison of General Atomics, Courtland Weisleder of Greener Dawn and Michael Hostetler of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati .

REGIONAL INITIATIVES
San Diego Region Secures CREBs Financing
CREBs
CleanTECH San Diego delivered a significant victory for the region this week. The IRS, the federal agency responsible for administering Clean Renewable Energy Bonds, announced on October 27 that San Diego municipalities won financing for 192 solar projects totaling over $150 million dollars. San Diego captured 19% of the nationwide allocations awarded to public agencies. Winners include Chula Vista, Lemon Grove, Santee, Santee Schools, UC San Diego, San Diego State University and others. By contrast, the last round of CREB applications awarded to the San Diego region included only one project totaling $1.3 MM—a stark difference from this year’s robust performance. The success of this effort is attributed to the network of CleanTECH San Diego members who provided pro bono assistance and expert services to our regional municipal applicants. Those members and service providers include Latham & Watkins, UC San Diego, Stone & Youngberg, PE Consulting and Southern Contracting. Our partnerships with both CCSE and the San Diego Foundation were equally critical to our success. Now the work begins to support the actual build of these regional solar projects. This effort will further cement San Diego’s dominance as the nation’s leader in solar PV installations. Kudos are in order to the outstanding CleanTECH San Diego member service providers and partners who enabled this success.
Greening San Diego Program
With October’s federal allocation awards announced for both the EECBG block grants and the CREBS IRS bond funding authority to the Cities of Santee, Lemon Grove and Santee Schools, Greening San Diego now transitions into the implementation phase. The City of Santee is finalizing their RFP for professional services to generate the investment-grade audits required to scope their targeted energy efficiency retrofits and priority renewable projects. Resulting from the CleanTECH San Diego-led coalition to apply for stimulus funding and among our Greening San Diego partners, Karl Christensen at Santee Schools enjoyed the largest success in securing $20M in IRS CREBs bonding authority to support 15 identified solar PV projects. This program’s overarching objective to create and replicate a sustainability model in the surrounding cities continues to demonstrate the power of shared learnings and collaboration at it finest.
POLICY AND ADVOCACY
AB 811 - Clean Generation Program
CleanTECH San Diego is participating in a working group to continue shaping the successful launch and implementation of The San Diego Clean Enterprise Program, stemming from the 2008 enactment of AB 811. Sponsored by Erik Caldwell in the Office of Mayor Sanders, the diverse group of stakeholders, including member companies such as Greener Dawn, Siliken Renewable, SDG&E and others are tasked with focusing on a wide set of program design issues on this innovative program including but not limited to: program eligibility, nature and source of incentives, vendor qualifications and management, local job creation, and marketing and customer access. Assembly Bill 811 allows municipal governments to provide financing to property owners for renewable energy installations and energy-efficiency retrofits.
November 3 marks the launch date of a series of program information sessions open to the public, providing updates on the program design. These 8 sessions will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. throughout November. For a calendar of these sessions contact: CleanGeneration@sandiego.gov.
Energy Efficiency
City of San Diego and SDG&E sought out CleanTECH San Diego to take the lead on program management of the Regional Peer-to-Peer Street Lighting Working Group. The participating municipalities have identified roadway "cobra" retrofits as their top priority. With the recent allocation of EECBG block grant funding there is greater urgency to develop regional specifications for both induction and LED retrofit candidates to provide the required flexibility to meet the application-specific requirements of each municipality. CleanTECH San Diego’s Marty Turock will be leading the program for the region.
CleanTECH SHOWCASE: Featuring Kleiner Perkins, Aptera and PCN Technology
CleanTECH San Diego’s Capital Formation Committee is launching the CleanTECH Showcase—a new quarterly series featuring prominent members of the investment community and pioneering regional companies. CleanTECH San Diego’s CEO Awarded Accolades for Leadership
On October 27, Lisa Bicker, President and CEO of CleanTECH San Diego, was awarded the distinction of one of San Diego’s dynamic business leaders and role models for the business community. With over 160 nominees to the 16th Annual Women Who Mean Business Awards, Lisa was one of 30 winners honored by the San Diego Business Journal for her professional achievements and contributions to San Diego. This prestigious ceremony featured keynote speaker, California gubernatorial candidate and former EBAY CEO, Meg Whitman as she inspired others to take on leadership roles and positively impact their communities.
Newsweek Awards CleanTECH San Diego Member Company
Newsweek released its 2009 Green Rankings last month, rating the 500 largest U.S. companies on the sustainability of their practices. 4 of the top 5 slots were given to technology companies. CleanTECH San Diego member Hewlett-Packard topped the list with its strong programs to reduce GHG emissions. HP is the first major IT company to report GHG emissions associated with its supply chain and has made an effort to remove toxic substances from its products. We salute HP for its global leadership and its local commitment to CleanTECH San Diego.
