ADVOCACY
Biofuels EDGE
As part of the EDGE Initiative, CleanTECH San Diego participated in an inbound press trip arranged by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. CleanTECH San Diego's Jason Anderson briefed reporters from Ethanol & Biofuels News, FUEL, Biofuels Journal, Algae Industry Magazine, and www.Cleantechies.com on the EDGE Initiative and provided further insight on the region's cleantech cluster. Reporters also met with Steve Mayfield, SD-CAB and representatives of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Sapphire Energy, Buster Biofuels, Circle Bio, Kent BioEnergy, and Community Fuels.
In addition, CleanTECH San Diego hosted a Biofuels Industry Advisory Council meeting in October to provide an update on the EDGE Initiative and to discuss efforts around curriculum development. Steve Mayfield gave his progress report in the development of curriculum for the biofuels training programs. The Industry Advisory Council is reviewing and commenting on the course outlines to ensure training programs are in-line with local industry needs. Special guest speaker, Retired Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn, a national expert on the links between national security and the need for policies that enhance our energy security, provided his thoughts on the intersection of energy, climate change and national security to the council. He also shared his perspective on how biofuels play an important role in creating a sustainable global environment.
The Edge Initiative: Educating and Developing Workers for the Green Economy will address workforce and training needs associated with the biofuels industry in both San Diego and Imperial Valley - creating job opportunities for unemployed and dislocated workers, in addition to creating career pathways for those interested in the biofuels industry.
Proposition 23
In conjunction with the No on 23 campaign, CleanTECH San Diego hosted a local press conference to educate voters on the flaws of Proposition 23. The press conference featured CleanTECH San Diego members Scott Sporrer of Siliken Renewable Energy and Joshua Weinsten of AMSOLAR Solar. They highlighted the economic benefits of AB 32 and how the state's law is helping to create a marketplace in California and allowing their business to grow. They explained how the passage of Proposition 23 would significantly alter the cleantech economy in California and be detrimental to the region's cluster of 650+ cleantech companies.
Southern California Cleantech Alliance Launch
We are excited to announce the formal launch of our Southern California Cleantech Alliance, with our partners CleanTech OC and Clean Tech Los Angeles. Our organizations have partnered to strengthen southern California as the mega-region of cleantechnology. We look forward to partnering on events and programs in the future. This formal launch will take place on November 15, 2010, in tandem with the Governor's Global Climate Summit at UC Davis. Here Governor Schwarzenegger will join the leaders of our organizations as we officially recognize our collaborative efforts. SMART GRID
Clean Enterprise Program
On October 7, CleanTECH San Diego and SDG&E hosted its first in a series of meetings for the Smart Grid Stakeholder Working Group at SDG&E's Mission Control Center. This meeting provided a high-level overview of smart grid and SDG&E's role in modernizing the grid to regional leaders from the private and public sectors. Along with a touring SDG&E's facilities the Working Group was given a preliminary overview of smart grid, smart meter, and other ancillary energy programs. Community leaders from CONNECT, the City of San Diego, SANDAG, ECOtality and the San Diego Regional Workforce Partnership learned about the various smart grid components, including energy efficiency, electric vehicles, and demand response programs. The next Smart Grid Stakeholder Working Group is scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2011, and includes a tour of University of California at San Diego's MicroGrid and energy storage site.
CAPITAL FORMATION
On October 26, CleanTECH San Diego sponsored the von Liebig Center's Clean Tech Innovation and Commercialization Program's "Technology Showcase". This event featured presentations from the 2010 Innovator Awardees for their development of clean technologies on the UCSD and SDSU campuses. Each presenter was awarded a $50,000 prototype grant for further development of their innovations. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Sempra Energy's Debra Reed commended the researchers on their innovative products and general contribution to the developing cleantech cluster in the region. CleanTECH San Diego's Capital Formation Committee continues to support lab-to-market research and development at UCSD and SDSU.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Greening San Diego
CleanTECH San Diego's "Greening San Diego" partner cities, Santee and Lemon Grove, along with Coronado, Del Mar, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside are continuing to execute on their greenhouse inventory baselining. The San Diego Foundation and ICLEI are conducting training sessions to lead participants through the master data workbook which houses the energy consumption and the waste and recycling data. Designated USD student interns are supporting each of these cities' efforts as we transition into the collection and processing phase of this project. Our completion is targeted by year's end.
The City of Santee is the beneficiary of one of the first pilot audits of the recently launched Energy Roadmap Program which is being led by a collaborative effort by SDG&E and SANDAG. In addition to the results of this audit being used to prioritize EECBG upgrades to Santee's City Hall Complex, Santee is also preparing to investigate the viability of solar PV at City Hall.
Street Lighting Working Group
Progress continues with our San Diego Regional Street Lighting Working Group initiative. The City of Santee ordered its induction fixtures and arranged for the recycling of those street lights that are being replaced. Installation of their first phase of 940 street light retrofits begins in November. The City of El Cajon is also expecting delivery of their luminaires to proceed with their installation. Congratulations to the City of La Mesa for being the first city to leverage the collaboration of our SLWG by exercising the Public Agency "piggyback clause" in El Cajon's contract. This avoided the time and expense of conducting their own procurement process and thereby accelerated the energy reduction and cost benefit to taxpayers for the retrofit of 900 of the city's street lights. This is being funded through an ARRA EECBG grant.
Additionally, the Port of San Diego initiated a Port-wide outdoor lighting assessment to systematically evaluate roadway, parking lot and walkway lighting. Associated energy and cost savings as well as incentives for LED technology will be outlined to assist in prioritization of eligible sites and funding in preparation for the retrofits.
