“...I am convinced that the integration of intellectual capital and San Diego’s historic platform of innovation surely suggest it’s a matter of time before massive technology breakthroughs happen in our own backyard.”

Solar Demonstration Projects

SDG&E has initiated a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Demonstration program to explore several promising technologies that have the potential to capture more energy from the sun in an economical way. Starting with installations in October 2008, and continuing through the end of the year, SDG&E will host five different CSP technologies at our facilities. These emerging solar technologies include troughs, dish collectors, and a water suspended system. All concentrate the sun by 500 times or more using advanced optics. Each demonstration will run for 12 continuous months. For more info, visit sdge.com/solar.

Smart Meters

As part of SDG&E's commitment to help meet the region's energy demands, the utility will replace all electric meters and upgrade all gas meters with smart meters over the next three years. Smart meters are digital meters that have two-way communication capabilities. In the future, these new meter can help residents and businesses alike conserve energy, save money and preserve natural resources. Learn more about smart meters at sdge.com/smartmeter.

Sustainable Communities Program

SDG&E's award-winning program encourages energy-efficient design and construction. Solar panels and other energy-smart features help to reduce customers' electric bills. Completed "green" projects range from an apartment complex fully powered by the sun and the first LEED™ certified marina in the world. Visit sdge.com/sustainable to view all projects.

Clean Transportation Program

The goal of this program is to address the public's growing interest in a variety of alternative electric transportation technologies, including electric vehicles. The development of the program was driven by the national priorities to reduce fuel consumption, promote the use of electricity as an alternative fuel, reduce dependence on foreign oil. In October 2008, results of SDG&E's Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) 2007 demonstration project will be available. Visit sdge.com/cleantransportation for more information.
